Behind the Grooves: Why We Are Now Play-Testing Every Single Vintage Record
Share
At Vinyl Legend, we live and breathe music, and we see ourselves as true curators of classic albums. Because we want to make sure you get the absolute best listening experience when you buy from our vintage vinyl selection, we are making a major upgrade to our quality control process.
Moving forward, every single vintage record we put out for sale will now be fully play-tested. --- Starting on 1 June 2025
The Truth About Visual Grading
In the past, not all of our records went through a full needle-to-groove play test. Like most record shops, we relied heavily on a thorough visual inspection under bright lights. But if you’ve been crate-digging long enough, you know that vinyl can be incredibly deceptive.
-
The Deceptive Looker: Sometimes a record looks absolutely flawless—shiny, scratch-free, and practically brand new—but it sounds terrible due to groove wear or hidden pressing defects.
-
The Hidden Gem: On the flip side, we frequently find records that look a bit tired or have superficial paper scuffs, yet they play through beautifully with incredible sound quality.
Because a visual grade only tells half the story, we are putting the needle to the wax on every vintage arrival to eliminate the guesswork.
What Are We Listening For?
When we play-test a record, we aren't just letting it spin in the background; we are actively listening for the finer details that matter to a true audiophile. Here is what our team is listening for during our quality control checks:
-
Persistent Background Noise: We listen closely during quiet intros, acoustic passages, and track transitions to detect any excessive hiss or surface noise that takes away from the music.
-
Pops and Crackles: We check for repetitive clicks, pops, and crackling sounds caused by deep, hidden scratches or stubborn dirt deep inside the grooves.
-
Skips and Sticks: We ensure the needle tracks perfectly from the outer edge to the run-out groove without skipping forward or getting stuck in an infinite loop.
-
Audio Distortion: We keep an ear out for inner-groove distortion or "fuzziness" in the audio, ensuring the high frequencies and deep bass notes ring out clean and true.
Setting a New Standard for Your Listening Room
By adding this rigorous step to our workflow, we ensure that when you purchase a pre-loved album from us, you know exactly how it will behave on your turntable. We want you to drop the needle with total confidence every single time.
